Cuckoo clock - Usually hangs on the wall although a very few rest on a shelf. They are all identified by their cuckoo song imitating the cuckoo bird found in Europe.  A  bird will usually come out and "cuckoo".  Sometimes an additional figure like a man with a beer stein will make an appearance.  The cuckoo will announce the half hour with one cuckoo and the hour with multiple cuckoos. Music (if so equipped) will play on the hour and sometimes on the half hour also.

Some clocks play music, display moving dancers and may have animation figures. Most cuckoo clocks come from the Black Forest section of Germany.

Many of the clocks have been brought home from Germany by tourists and army personnel.

Cuckoo clocks are often considered to be very inexpensive but the more intricate and complicated models sell in the thousands of dollars.
